So you’ve never had a Hot Pot, eh!?

If you have never had a “Hot Pot” AKA “Steamboat” well , you are most definitely in for a culinary experience like no other! I mean talk about food and fun!

I had never heard of a Hot Pot either, then I got invited to a dinner party and that all changed. My friend’s husband had done some travelling through Asia where this was common.  I saw the set up and was immediately intrigued. A steaming pot of home made broth in the centre of the table, surrounded by meats and veggies and different sauces. We ate, we chatted and I learned how social and wonderful a Hot Pot was.  I asked questions and made my mind up right then and there that I was going host a Hot Pot too. I was OBSESSED!

That very weekend I went to my local Asian Market and picked up some supplies to put it through a trial run with the fam….everyone loved it!

Trial run with the fam!

Ok, trial run complete. That was fun! Now it gets serious!  The nice thing about a Hot Pot is that you can really make it your own. You can make your own sauces, chicken, beef, or vegetable broth from scratch, and make it very healthy.  You can also add some fun,  different choices so that everyone at your table has something to try and enjoy.

Then I took this to another level! The divided pot I originally bought was  nice and you can have spicy broth on one side and mild on the other etc. It does not have a ton of room though for everyone’s little strainer to sit. I bought a bigger pot with no divider and simmered my home made broth ALL day! I seasoned it up nice and made it slightly spicy. I made avocado salads to start and the dipping sauces from scratch and also added lots of different choices to the table. You cook your food in the simmering chicken broth for a few min, then put it in your bowl with a bit of the broth, season your bowl with some sauces and …OH MY! It’s just DELICIOUS!! Everyone still talks about our Hot Pot dinner Party. Here it its….

A few things cooking while we eat our salad. After the salads everyone will get their own bowl to start the Hot Pot fun!

Hot Pot dream!

That looks delicious! I’ve heard about these and I’ve always wanted to try it. What meats and veggies do you use?

    1. Hi! It IS delicious, and so much fun. It’s super fun for a dinner party too. Your guests will be surprised! You can use just about anything. We used thinly sliced chicken, beef, and salmon. For veggies we used kale, bok choy, baby spinach, mushrooms, broccoli etc. One of my favourite are sweet potato slices. We added some other fun choices for our guests too. We made a list and then prepared the meats the day before, and the veggies that morning so they were fresh. The broth is started about 2 days ahead in the crock pot, then transferred to the “hotpot” Near the end the broth gets very tasty and delicious. Let me know if you try it, and how it turned out 🙂
